Sociology
Vision and Goals
Sociology is a field of study that focuses on the interaction between individuals and society, derived from the Latin word "Socius" meaning society and the Greek word "logos" meaning knowledge. The word sociology was first coined by the French sociologist Auguste Comte. In this scientific discipline, a scientific analysis is conducted on human and social groups. Sociology emerged in the 19th century to examine, understand, and analyze all crises and events during the transition from traditional society to modern society.
In our school, Sociology is taught as a two-year course in the Cambridge IGCSE Sociology curriculum for students in grades 9 and 10. The Sociology course is elective, and an average of 30-40 students take the IGCSE Sociology curriculum. After the two-year course, students take exams on research methods, culture, family, media, education, crime, and social inequalities at the end of grade 10.
Successful and interested students continue with the four-exam A-Level curriculum in grades 11 and 12. The first stage of this curriculum is AS-Level in grade 11 and covers research methods and techniques, culture, and family. The second stage is in grade 12 and covers media, education, religion, and globalization.
Our Vision
Our vision is to explain the behaviors of individuals in society and the reasons behind these behaviors by using various research methods.
Our Goals
Our primary teaching goals in sociology are:
- To introduce and provide opportunities for students to study sociology
- To present the field in a theoretical and practical manner
- To enable students to observe and analyze the purposes, importance, and impact of different institutions and organizations in society, such as media, school, family, government, and religion, from different perspectives.
